I know this telescope is cheap and most people would recommend saving some cash to buy a better one, but I am just doing a small homework assignment that requires me to observe and sketch one or two of Jupiter's moons. Will this telescope get the job done?

Yes. I've done it with 10x50 binoculars before, so you can definitely see the moons with a cheap telescope. You won't even need the highest 'power' either.

The only thing you'll have trouble with, at the start, is figuring out which one is which. By taking a few observations over the course of 1 or 2 nights you can figure it out.

Yes, but Jupiter is only about 80 degrees from the Sun right now, and getting closer every day.

The resolving power of the PS 450x is only about 20 arcseconds at best, and Ganymede (for example) is about 1.3 arcseconds right now - - - so you will not be able to see any details, it will just be a (blured) spot of light.

If you get a current issue of Sky and Telescope or Astronomy magazine you will find charts that can tell you which moons your are sketching.

You should easily see the four largest moons of Jupiter. The scope may be cheap but it is better than Galileo had.

You should actually be able to see the moons with simple7x50 binoculars. But yes, you should be able to see them with the power seeker too.

The binoculars will be easier to use.
