It does that because they both have the same dreams. They both want what they think they cant have. Like for Ariel she wants to be on land and be a human. But melody wants to be a mermaid. So they have similar songs because they have a lot in common. the creators did that purposely so we would notice the inevitable bond that they share.

Maybe there are only so many moves the creators thought a mermaid could do.
