I participate in a weekly photo contest for Chinese Water Dragons. I have two, Diego and Lego. This week's theme is "nap time" or "lazy" And so I have to have a picture with good quality, fits the theme, and is still cute. I got 4 pictures that fit the theme I need your help as to which one to enter here are the links.

I like all of them but 1 & 4 the most. REMEMBER I need quality as well as theme. This is a very hard contest I have a sucky camera compared to other peoples' on the contest. Anyway THANKS Y'ALL!

Well, as for photo quality, I'd say two is out (of focus), and 3 is out, because your subjects are totally hidden in shadow.

Of 1 and 4, both have god and bad qualities - 1 shows the vibrant colors of the critter, as well as sharp focus. However, there appears to be a film on the lens when the picture was taken, because of the spots on the darker background. Also, Diego stretched himself a bit, and looks rather - deflated? Not the plump, sturdy look of a reptile. This may not matter so much if they often stretch out and look like that, and the judges also own the same animals.

4 is a much cleaner picture, but not nearly as focused or vibrant. The contrast along his stomach, too, hides alot of his belly in shadow. However, because you can make out the picture's surroundings, you can crop any eye distractions and give it a snazzy title, like, "Beware Sleeping Pot Heads".

At any rate, if you can manipulate the pictures, I'd say work on the contrast/brightness/hue of #4 to even his belly out (define the line from him and the pot's edge). Then crop so the reptile either takes up the entire bottom of the field or the center of the picture. Unless you have experience, cleaning up picture one would be more difficult, though the end picture might be more interesting.

I recommend using nr. 4. I'm an artist and can tell you that the LEGO photograph has the best composition, and is visually more rich and interesting than the others. The shape of the dragon flows nicely with the shape of the plantpot. Also there is some good contrast in the background between the blackness of the upper right corner and the lighter ground in the lower left corner. The highlights on the edges of the pot, contrasted with the darker background, nicely emphasize the lizard as the main motive. Finally this photo has a relaxing effect on the viewer that communicates comfort and well being of the dragon. I'm sure all animal lovers will feel good about that.

I like the theme of #1 but the clarity is not as good as #4. None of them have super clarity, but the last photo is probably the clearest, with the best view of the animal.
