First take a razor knife and score any paint where the sash is held in by the window trim around the perimeter of the sash (window frame). Rub Vaseline in the track above the track and take a small flat bar and gently pry up on the window. If the window breaks free push it all the way up. Continue to rub more vaseline in the track below the window. Work the window up and down a few times and it should loosen up.

There are plenty of other methods so don't try this until you read all the answers. There could be a better remedy for your particular situation. Good luck! I personally don't like wax because it tends to get hard in the winter.

Use candle wax. It won't wash off like powder or soap. Just rub an old candle on the sticking surfaces. Then move the window open and shut a few times. Re-apply wax if necessary.

This also works for sticking sliding drawers if they have the old wood sliders.

Rub some paraffin wax on the window sash.
Also try pouring some liquid wax down into the window where the sash is. Keep moving the window up and down to spread the wax around.

Rub chalk on the side of the wooden window where it is sticking. It should slide smoothly after that.
