Unless you have an obvious compound fracture, the only way to diagnose a broken bone for sure is with an x-ray.

You might be able to make a good guess if you know exactly what happened. Injuries similar to fractures are sprains and jammed fingers. Sprains involve stretching the tendons or ligaments too far, and these cause severe bruising and swelling over a large area. Finger jams occur when you jam you finger into something. With a jam, the swelling is mostly focused on a knuckle.

Hairline fractures need a lot more force than sprains or jams. Usually something needs to hit you pretty hard, you need to moving fast, or you need to have most of your body weight on hand to cause a break. Fractures are the least obvious type of injury -- there's really nothing diagnostic of a fracture based on the pain or swelling. So, if you are not confident you have a sprain or a jammed finger, its a good idea to get an x-ray.
