Best would be dry to stabilize the cob, and cleaned of kernels certainly. It can be cut with a hacksaw or sharp knife, and gently drilled or scraped out for the bowl. A small hole drilled for the stem; most often the stems are wooden/ Hollow REED material. Obviously plastic would melt, metal tube would become hot to the touch.

The stem is easy just get a hollow wood tube and cut it the length you need. For the bowl you should find a very dry cob and cut about two inches off the end of it.

You will then need to hollow it out but don't break through the bottom. I would spend time whittling a little on the outside so it looks cool.

Now take a drill and drill a hole towards the bottom of the cob on a slight angle so when you put the wood tube in the hole it fits snug and tilts up slightly. That way when you smoke out of it the resin from the tobacco will stay in the pipe.

You will have to condition it by using it. The more you use it the better it will work. Have fun!
