The United States became independent from Brtitain in 1776. As for when we actually became a country, that is uncertain. The Revolutionary War was the main catalyst that brought about the independence of America, though the War of 1812 really solidified our standing as a country, with the rest of the world.

the 13 colonies became the United States of America in 1789 after the War for Independence when we militarily defeated Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was signed July 4th, 1776, but that did not make us a COUNTRY until we defeated the British--when Cornwalis surrendered to General Washington, who became the new COUNTRY'S first president

Just to make things different. Some people have said that prior to the American Civil War, people said "the United States are..." and afterwards they said "the United States is..."
Since the word state is in most cases used to refer to a sovereign nation, we may have lost sight of the original intention of the confederation under which the original colonies/states were united. The American Civil War cemented the role of the federal government in making the United States a single entity.
But that's a longshot, and I wouldn't go into a high school history class trying to make that argument. It's just for discussion purposes really.

We were America first and the United STates came during the so called civil war. the war didn't help us to do anything but give everything over to the goverment.
