"What will I gain" A greater knowledge about yourself, and a better understanding of the world and the universe. "What will I lose" Ignorance, fear, intolerance "How much time do I need" As much time as you are willing to put forth. Many will say at least a year and a day, but I'd say as much as you give. "Do I have to believe in certain things" Yes, you have to believe in YOURSELF "What kind or kinds of magic should I learn" There are many varous forms of magic out there. I would suggest you google magic, wicca, or something of the like, find a form of magic that draws your attention and start there. "Can I learn on line and where" Books would be a better option, but you can learn online. Many will say, stay away from online schools. NEVER pay for lessons. Perhaps join a forum where you can ask questions and get answers from real people. There are many forums and groups out there on the net. I'd explore...trial and error...its the only way to really learn. Hope I was of some help.
