I have to agree with Jeffrey S. Carter was a good player, even a great player, but not a HOF player. His career numbers are solid, and his 10+ 100RBI seasons is impressive, but overall his numbers will probably not be enough.
Jim Rice and Dave Parker, two other sluggers from close to his era (a half-decade before) were probably better hitters and neither of them are in and Parker isn't even close. Andre Dawson also isn't in and he as a 400-400 guy.
I also agree with Jeffrey that you can't compare Carter with Puckett. PUckett was a great centerfielder - the most important outfield position and Puckett had some great seasons. Puckett may have also got some votes because he couldn't add on to his numbers.
Carter was a key member of those Blue Jays teams, but those teams had so many good players that no one player stands out over the others.
When you think of the best players of All-Time, which is what the HOF should be reserved for - the elite - I think Joe Carter misses that cut.

Not to be rude, but Joe Carter is not a Hall of Famer. He was first eligbile in 2004, so that means he has been on the ballot for four years. If he hasn't made it by now, he never will. It's not like the sportswriters are going to wake up and say "Hey Joe Carter is a Hall of Famer!" then vote him in.
He had some gaudy statistics, but they are not quite good enough. That career batting average alone will keep him out. Comparing him to Kirby Puckett doesn't make a lot of sense, considering that Puckett hit well over .300 for his career, was a great center fielder, and was the best player on the Twins. Carter had the advantage of playing on some loaded Blue Jay teams, and had a lot of guys getting on base in front of him, how else do you hit .259 for a career and drive in so many runs? Carter hit .300 only one time, and had seasons of .243, .232, .234, and was in the .250s, lots of seasons. That's not a great hitter. I'd pick a guy like Paul O'Neill (who's also not a Hall of Famer), before Joe Carter.
Puckett didn't make it to the Hall only because of his 2 rings, but because he was a great all-around player.
I liked Joe Carter a lot, but 396 HR isn't so great anymore, and that's considering that he played about half his career in the steroid era. I

He shouldn't.
His OBP + SLG was 4% better than league average over his career.
There are hundreds of players who have lead the league in important hitting categories more than he did.
Let's consider similarity scores. I use these a lot; they're a statistical method that tries to see what hitter most resembles another. For each year of his career, Carter was most like Wally Post and Jermaine Dye and Ruben Sierra.
Did anyone but his family ever consider Joe Carter one of the greatest few outfielders of his day? That means better than Puckett, Gwynn, Griffey, Bonds, Winfield, Rickey Henderson, Andre Dawson?
If so, they should really go back and do some more research...he was not.

Joe Carter was an All-Star and will forever live in baseball lore by ending the 1993 World Series with a home run but his career falls short of Hall of Fame.

If there was a "Hall Of The Every Good" he would make it but he's not a hall of famer. There are plenty of ballplayers with Carters type of numbers and they're not in. Sorry.
