Thay are manual in the UK. they have many more gears than a standard car gearbox, some even have 'half gears' to give a bit of extra power when pulling heavy loads uphill......

FACT - Until about 5 years ago, 90% of tractor units were sold with manual gearboxes.. Automatic gearboxes simply weren't reliable enough to cope with the multiple gear changes required. However, computer contolled gear shifts have changed all that

Over the last few years, semi-automatic and fully automatic gearboxes have gradually become more and more prevalent in trucks. About 60%-70% of new buys are specified with automatic transmission.

Having driven dozens of artics...

For at least the last 5 to 10 years virtually ALL of them have been either semi or full automatic gearboxes.

Most have 'tip-tronic' style shifts, others simply have three buttons 'D' 'N' & 'R'.

There are practically NO artics with manual gearboxes & clutches these days...

most are automatic or semi automatic but there are also manual as well I would say the spread of them are about equal between semi automatic and automatic

Most are manual, but you can get either.
