This is a quadratic equation. In order to solve it, you have to reverse the FOILing process:
(x-3)(x-1)=0
If you multiply this out, it'll equal x^2-4x+3=0
Now, you can subsitute x with anything that'll make the equation true. So:
3-3=0 there fore if x=3, the equation would be true
Because this is a quadratic equation, x can have two values.
1-1=0 as well, so there fore x can =3 and 1
Now to finalize and check your answer, just plug in each of your possible x values:
3^2-4(3)+3=0
=9-12+3=0
=-3+3+0
=0=0...equation works
1-4+3=0
=-3+3=0
=0=0...equation works
Hopes this helps!

Factor the problem:
(x+1)(x+3)=0
Set each problem equal to zero:
(x+1)=0 (x+3)=0
Subtract 1 and 3 from each equation:
x=-1 x=-3
