In the Chamber of Secrets, We learn more about the History of Hogwarts School. We learn that its about 1000 years old. We learn that Slytherin (one of the original 4) placed a giant serpent in the chamber of secrets. This of cause is about 1000 years ago. How come then the entrance to the chamber is through a toilet sink? Surely not even wizards and witches had mod-cons back then?

It could be two explainations - 1) she got it wrong 2) It could be that the toilet entrance was added a long time after Salazar Slytherin created the chamber of secrets, my memory is going i read that book a long time ago, but did it actually say that Salazar created the entrance? Or did it just say that he created the chamber? The original entrance could have been destroyed or sealed off in the future by the headmaster of the time, and then a future student (perhaps Voldemort) could have thought of a way to get in and created an entrance around the sinks. I think that's the most likely explaination

It can't be time turners, they arent allowed to be seen or heard or alter anything, so theres no way they could have hauled a toilet back with them!

I'm thinking that with magic, things evolve of their own accord. So the entrance wasn't originally a sink, it was just something else in the "bathroom" at the time. As plumbing evolved, and as other things evolve, Hogwarts changed through time. So the entrance remains in the same place, but shifts as newer modern conveniences become available.

People still had to go, even a 1000 years ago. Maybe there used to be a bucket of water concealing the entrance, and the plumbing was added later.

Maybe the entrance was in a broom cupboard which was later converted to a bathroom.....

We discover in a later book (prisoner of azkaban) that witches and wizards have the power to travel through time, when Hermione uses a Time Turner to get to all her classes and save Buckbeak etc.
Time travel would certainly explain it.

I will go with the 'Time-Turner' theory. After all Voldermort was the Heir of Slytherin, he at least knew about plumbing. But since he's dead we will never know.

time turners. wizards and witches can go into time so maybe that's one reason

the other is maybe they always there. they the wizards knew about toilets, sinks 1000 years ago. besides they have magic.

Well why not. Maybe one of the teachers saw into the future and decided it was a better method than buckets in the quad. With magic you can do almost anything
