A hanging glacier is situated on a valley wall and does not reach the valley floor. It "hangs" on the side of the valley.

'Now and Then..` has the right idea,
but to explain a bit:
Glaciers flow much like river systems.
A 'hanging glacier` is a remnant of one of
the tributaries of a larger, deeper glacier that
has retreated past the point where the tributary
joined it leaving the tributary hanging in its
higher valley.

a piece of ice that is big enough to be called a glacier.But also hanging from a larger ice berg or glacier
