~The first actual declarations of war were by the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand against Germany after the invasion of Poland, followed shortly by the declarations of France, South Africa and Canada. England did not independently declare war.

The French and British declared war on Germany to give tacit compliance to various treaty obligations. Had they actually followed through and gotten involved in the war then, the whole affair may have been done and over with in a few weeks or months. Instead, the "Phoney War" occupied the Western powers for the next 6 months while the Germans consolidated their gains, protected their lines and supplies and continued to occupy new ground.

The Soviets, meanwhile, completed their own invasions of Poland, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe with nary a peep out of London, Paris or Washington.

The PM in 1939 was Neville Chamberlain. He asked the Germans to pull back from their attack on Poland. No such undertaking took place and therefore the PM with great reluctance had no option but to declare war on Nazi Germany.

In September 1939 neither Britain nor the British people either wanted or were ready for a war. The economy was booming and most people who wanted a job had one.

My house was built in 1937 - but don't be fooled. We were thinking there might be a war. The road outside my house as 8-inches of concrete, sufficient to hold the weight of a battle tank of the 1930s. There are heavy iron girders built into my house too. Their pupose was to minimise bomb damage.

Also, the gasmain leading from the main gas supply beneath the road to my house, is encased in thick heavy concrete.

We were sort of getting ready, hence the PMs constant stalling for time.
