not positive, because of zero, but "non-negative".
The absolute function is defined as:
f(x) = x if x >= 0
f(x) = -x if x < 0

Yes. The absolute value of any number is positive aside from 0 because 0 is neither negative nor positive.

The absolute value of 8 is 8.

The absolute value of -8 is 8, too.

Every number's absolute value is ALWAYS positive. ALWAYS. Why? Because when you find the absolute value, you're counting how far it is away from zero on a number line. Zero would still be zero, because it is zero spaces away from zero. There is no way an absolute value of any number will be negative. You can't be -3 spaces away from zero. You're just 3 spaces.

Absolute value is the distance from zero.
So the absolute value of any number (negative or positive) is going to be positive.
