2x + 5y=1
-x+6y=8 multiply this by 2 and add
==========
0 +17y=17

so y=1 put this solution into one of the lines
x=-2

2x + 5y = 1
-x + 6y = 8

Multiply the second guy by two and add it to the first guy to get rid of x.

17y = 17
y = 1

Now, plug this value in to either equation.

2x + 5(1) = 1
2x + 5 = 1
2x = -4
x = -2

You're done. It's as easy as that.
