you have to remove the gas tank if it has efi, first disconnect the ground cable from the battery( after its on ramps or up on blocks or a lift, drain as much gas out of the tank before yo ustart too, remove the straps that hold the tank in place and all the fuel lines have to be disconnected too( takes a special tool ) to remove the fuel lines, wear eye protective glasses, gas will spray out when you remove the fuel line from the fuel filter, be careful not to get it in your face. once you have the fuel tank out it takes a hammer and a flat edge chisel or simular tool to remove the holding ring that keept the fuel pump assembly / fuelguage sending unit in the tank, after you have it off( it turns counterclockwise) the fuel lines and sending unit assemble will pull out of the tank, once thats done you can replace the pump and fuel screen( sock) , then put it back together and fill the tank, ( make sure you plug the electrical wires back up for the fuel pump , and install a new fuel filter too, at most auto parts stores they sell manuals for most vehicles, they cost about 15 bucks, it would be best to get one,

Not a real big deal-pull the big tank shield off, lower the tank slightly by loosening the strap bolts, disconnect the fuel supply hos, the fuel return hose, the tank vent hose, the filler hose and the filer vent hose, lower the tank the rest of the way out, and using a brass hammer and punch, knock the lock ring on the sending unit loose, and pull the sending unit out. Then remove the pump from the sending unit and replace it--oh, by the way-as a professional technician, we NEVER replace just the pump on those anymore-the aftermarket (cheap) pumps have an excessively high failure rate(as from the discount auto parts-type stores) and we only replace with AC Delco tank "units'-the pump and sending unit assemblies.
Due to the labor involved ,it only makes sense to do it with the right and longest-lasting parts.
And by the way, if you are in need of the details, its probably best to have a professional do it-I personally know of an individual that burned his house down trying to change an in-tank pump!

Since the fuel pump is in the tank, this is usually not something you would attempt as a do-it-yourself project. You would have to first empty the tank, then have the proper tools to remove the lines, then drop the tank...

Drive it to the shop and pay them.

You have to pump all the gas out and then drop the tank down on the ground. This is not as easy as it sounds because you have to disconnect the fluid lines and electrical wires AS YOU ARE LOWERING IT so they do not break off.

Unless you have a floor jack, you dont want to attempt this job. You can't siphon the gas out of this tank and unless it is empty you'll need a jack and two people to handle it>
