I want to plant some cilantro, basil, garlic, green onions etc in pots in my yard. I live in phoenix. Will they grow back year after year or do I have to replant?

Herbs are generally pretty easy to grow from seed and not all that expensive to buy already growing. I'd treat them all like annuals and start over each year. If you let some of them flower and bolt (set seed), you can save the seeds and your money. Also, if you let the cilantro go to seed and collect it, you'll have a nice cache of coriander to use!

Those guys are mostly annuals, or are treated like annuals. Garlic will grow back year after yeat -- unless, of course, you harvest the bulb, which I assume you want to do.

Some herbs are perennials, and others are hardy perennials, which means they can't survive freezing. Rosemary, for example, will live quite long as long as it doesn't get frozen too hard.

In Phoenix, I think you're more in danger of drought rather than freezing though.

i wouldnt Plant them I would put in planter boxes, as that is what i did and i love going outside to get some basil for this or cilanto for that and when it gets TOO cold or dry i can bring into a nice warm spot and enjoy year round.
but you must make sure most herbs get lots of sun and water as thats what they love and good luck!
I live in northern california, semi snow area so i have to really look after all my outside plants!
