Go check out Crystal Lake. Perfect scene to study murder. Just watch out for the dude with the hockey mask. I hear he likes to hurt people.

There is a great series of How to Host a Mystery games, called "How to Host a Murder Mystery" geared for a teens. Barbeque with a Vampire, Roswell that Ends Well, and Hot Times at Hollywood High. All made by Decepher Games. Try your better book or game stores, or Amazon.com

cool idea.

you should base it off of the game clue.
you can get your family members to be the characters Prof. plum, ms. scarlet, etc.
and you can put clues around, i say you do the party on a boat, because there are different rooms.

then the kids can go around finding the clues, as a big group or something, so none of them get lost, and one clue can lead to another.

like one clue will say go to the room where you eat, then they will go to the dining room/kitchen and search for their next clue and so on.

hope this sounds good!
