Well,me and my mate are off to Romania for 8 nights..starting 22-09-07.
I think you,ll be ok ....although taxi drivers are prone to ripping you off(make sure meter is on )...and...ya might get ya bag nicked if they crowd around you. Other than that...don,t spend too much time in Bucharest....jump on that train and get up north to all the pretty little towns and rolling hills....cos thats where we,re heading... the city of "Brasov" to start..a very recommended hostel in Brasov is called "postavarului" (Brasov is bout 2 hours on the train from Bucharest)
In Bucharest...a recommended hostel is the "Butterfly"...(see hostel bookers)...they will even pick you up from the airport.
Our itinerary maybe a mini round trip on train.........Bucharest-Brasov-Sibuii-Arad-Timisoara-Craiova-Bucharest
But the best towns and scenery are up north....From Brasov you can train up to Sighisoara(medieval town)...stopping at Rupea and Saschiz on the way...the only problem is that you have to come back the same way...as there are no trains between Sighisoara and Arad. I would not spend too much money on going inside castles etc(like Bran)....ya seen one ya seen them all...From Bucharest you can do a 12 hour mini-bus tour for 69 euro(Bucharest-Targoviste-Curtea de Arges-Polienari-Bucharest) ...Book ya rooms on Hostel Bookers...work ya itinerary out....and enjoy. .
Good luck...

I lived in the UK and travelled as much as I could around Europe...and the majority was alone......there is nothing wrong with travelling alone....just be sensible.....its probably safer than the US!
As pointed out, don;t advertise wealth, keep your bags around you at all times, keep you day packs close and closed up ( especially on trains and buses I had my backpack in my lap)......ignore beggers or people coming up to you ( eg in Barcelona a gypsy woman came up to me to pin a carnation on telling me it was free...this was one of the few times I was travelling with someone who pulled me away and pointed out the other woman coming up behind to take my things while I was otherwise occupied)...but I will point out it was the ONLY time in all my travels like that).
If you want some company hostels are great places to meet people and I also went on some organised day trips to see csurrounding towns and viallges and it was another good place to meet people and not have to worry about things.
I never got to Bucharest....I would consider going myself if I was still there.....as I said be sensible...thats all. I personally did not go out much at night, but would start early in the day sightseeing and was usually knackered around 5-6pm...then I would eat close by to where I was staying and have a night in.
Have fun and go for it!

No clue about that area but have you tried a tour group? Not one of those cheesy everyone gets on a bus kind but more of you all fly over together and stay in the same hotel kind? Try calling your local travel agent and just see if any groups are going over there. Good luck.

I have no idea, but as with anywhere, keep your wits about you and your cash in your knickers. If I can survive New York, Amsterdam and West Hollywood on my own, I'm sure you'll be fine in Bucharest... Just make sure you know some of the language. HELP and POLICE is always handy!!
AngelBaby, one in how many millions? That's scaremongering. And it's the 21st century, women aren't pathetic little weaklings anymore!

I also travel alone. I have been a young woman, now not so young anymore.
Just be sensible about it.
Wear a money belt under your clothes for your passport and most of your money, and your (second) credit card.
Do not go into parts of the town you do not trust, and do not go home with people you have just met, (men.)
If you like to go out to get drunk it might be better to go with a tour group, but who screened the others in the group?
Traveling alone is kind of addictive, once you have learned the joys of not having to care for/about others you do not want to travel with a group anymore, at least not for a longer time.

Please be safe, I think you are better off with a travel buddy or a tour group.
