I took my daughter out the first week she was born, like almost every day. The week after she was born we drove 2 1/2 hours away to show her off to the family.
I think this is a personal decision. Some parents like to keep the baby inside away from public, not expose them to any germs, etc. For me it was the opposite. I needed life to be as normal as possible so she/we could get used to everything together.

You may want to explore the philosophy of "attachment parenting". Get a sling. Breastfeed. You do this and your baby will have wonderful defenses and be kept safe from those germs you would come in contact with in public places. Even if you only do it for the first 2 months.(refering to "wearing" the baby here, not breastfeeding) Attachment parenting simply refers to the baby always being physically on your body.Another bonus to this is that when you are out in public many people do not even realize that's a baby you have on your hip, keeps nosy folks who want to peek and touch at a safe distance. I used it with both children takes a bit to get used to, but once you get it down, not only is it a great protection to baby but also a great convenience for mom.

It's not taking them outside, it's exposing them to people. As long as you're not going to crowded places and letting people touch & hold the baby without washing their hands, the baby can go outside right away. Also, traveling in a car to see family is a lot different than getting on a plane.
Six to eight weeks is ridiculous. Use your good judgement and ask your pediatrician.

My doctor said it was fine to take them out right away, as long as you don't pass them around and let everyone touch them. He said to think logically; if baby doesn't go out for four to six weeks, mommy usually doesn't either. I don't know about you, but I couldn't stay cooped up for six weeks! Dr. Sears, who wrote The Baby Book, says that "home to a baby is where mommy is". I really believe that. I took my daughter out at 2 weeks old. We had a great time! Buy a sling; it'll make your life easier. I find my sling far more convenient than my stroller. My daughter goes almost everywhere with me. I love it and she seems to like it quite a bit too.

My son was two days old when we took him to Wal Mart for groceries on our way home from the hospital. We went on a hour long car trip three days later. We went on three and half hour car trip at three weeks and spent a day sight seeing.
As long as the baby is dressed appropriately and you keep the stranger contact to a minimum (use hand sanitizer), take your baby out. The sooner they get used to strange noises, riding in the car, etc. the better.
Use common sense though, if it is cold and flu season, use hand sanitizers on yourself before handling your baby after handling the shopping cart, etc. You are more likely to pass germs on to your baby than a stranger.

As long as you use caution that little one should be just fine going out with you. Should you need to..
If you are BreastFeeding your odds of a safer baby amongst all those germs is elevated because the baby will get antibodies from you. I have 4 kids and took them everywhere with me from day 1 I have never had any issues. So just use those new mommy instincts.

Well, i really didnt have the option of waiting a certain amount of time. my husband works 2 jobs and my immediate family lives many states away. i was the one who still had to go out and do the grocery shopping for my family, etc. i am a stay at home mom to 4 stepchildren besides my lil baby. she is four weeks old now and she hasnt had any problems from being taken out in public.
i did have this elderly lady like yell at me for taking her out once, but i was just like well what would you have me do? not everyone has the option of leaving the baby with someone....just the way it was for me.

You can take them out when ever there is no specific age. Just make sure you dont let everyone touch them. carry a bottle of hand sanitizer if people would like to hold the baby to avoid the transmission of germs since there immune system is low.

I took my baby out when she was 5 days old (we went to my in-law's house and target) I got comments like "ohhh, 5 days old and she's already out?" at first I felt bad but then she's 7 weeks old now and I've been taking her out eversince and she is just fine :) It's really up to you, when you feel comfortable taking your baby out :)
but with traveling, i am going to wait after my baby gets her shots..
