i have this roommate from romania. she was an orphan for i think 12 or 13 years and was adopted by a family here in america, who made a website dedicated to her and getting her to the states. she has a hearing problem that is mostly corrected by some sorta ear pieces she wears. anyways, she talks abnormally abundantly, is very nosy when i'm online and even talks when she knows i'm studying or am on the phone. does this have anything to do with her being stuck at Freud's oral stage??? does she just want all the attention that maybe she has gotten before for being an "orphan immigrant"? any theories are welcome. but how could i tell her politely to shut up and stay out of my business? lol....thanks in advance!!!

You are dealing with someone who has LOTS of emotional issues along with getting used to an entirely NEW CULTURE.

What I would do is, when both of you are calm, sit down together and actually show her what she is doing, how it is affecting you, and how it is not appropriate and not appreciated.

Believe it or not, she may not even know what she is doing is not appreciated.

After this is done, every time she starts to talk, just say "remember our conversation?" and don't react by anything else.

I think it is premature for you to be upset. First, try to teach her, then try to make that a habit, then if it still doesn't work, then you'll have to do whatever you'll have to do.

Just tell her; speak slowly (so I can understand).
Say; Please; don't shout (I can hear you).
People with hearing problems have a tendency to speak loud.
I don't think she wants attention I rather think she is lonesome and needs a close friend.
Be kind, friendly, and tolerant; but tell her she speaks too fast and too loud.
People of higher intelligence have a tendency to speak fast and they are quick to respond. (fast thinking)
You can practice " fast thinking" by conversing fast as she does.
But then she may slow down so you can (in return) speak slower. Make it a game - have fun.

Maybe she just likes to hear herself talk? I know plenty of people who are full of themselves and just enjoy hearing themselves talk.

She is lonely and maybe drinks too much caffeine.
