Great question.
One which the Zelikow 9/11 commission failed to adequately answer.

What amazes me about the answers to this question is the lack of knowledge they all have. The Pentagon trained for jsut such and attack in the year leading up to 9-11 and the Commander who ran the Drills and Scenarios that involved using hijacked airliners as weapons was the Captain onboard the Plane that crashed into the pentagon. Nice coincidence isn't it? The VP had stand down orders for all missle defense batteries and fighter jets that day. and We did know which planes were hhijacked we tracked them all morning. All other palnes were accounted for by verbal contact and transponder locator. SO it would not have been necessary to shoot everything out of the sky like they did flight 93. (thats why they never play the last 10 minutes of the cockpit recording)
And to the guy who reported this question: Haven't you read the new rules on reporting? You just reported yourself as well. There is still soemthing called freedom of speech even if you don't agree with what is being said. In the future just move on to the next question.

What are you referring to? Let me say I'm not a fan of Bush and Cheney. But do you realize what you're implying by saying they let the attacks happen, or even planned them? First of all, they sent out the air force as soon as they knew something was going down. But unfortunately the hijackers were smart enough to disable the planes tracking devices. Even if they hadn't, have you ever seen an air traffic controller's tracking screen? Thousands of tiny blips. So they're looking for one tiny blip out of thousands, which turned out not to even be on their screen. Plus, what if they had found the plane and shot it down? Everyone would be screaming that they had shot down a civilian plane, like they are already theorizing about the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.
That day was an absolute tragedy. My heart goes out to the victim's families and this entire country, because look at what has become of us since that day. You know, if we take ourselves down from the inside, then the terrorists have achieved their goals, haven't they? All of this partisan fighting - we're more divided now than ever. I would hope to God that Bush, as incompetent as he is, did everything he could that day, and our military did everything it could, to prevent more deaths.

It was not Bush or Cheney's call.
As soon as the hijackings where discovered the Aviation Department was to call for the military intervention.
The military cannot shot the hijacked plane down without the President's command, but they could have intervened.
Whoops! I'm laughing so hard I peed my pants. Guess I should blame Bush and Cheney.

OMG I'm so tired of the conspiracy theory crap. Believe me I am far from a bush fan. But the truth of the matter is there were only four military jets on alert on the east coast, when the terrorist struck. Contrary to belief we don't always have military jets over our own airspace ready to defend us. The thought behind this is that we will have plenty of time to get jets in the air if an attack was to come from Russia or any other country that may pose a threat. By the time the jets were scrambled and got their orders, the planes were already down.
One can of worms opened way up .....
ADDED: A great point by the person above ... Were they suppose to shoot down every plane? Enough of this god awful conspiracy theory crap. We got caught with our pants down ... Live with it and lets learn from it !

there is no source given for the declare that Cheney became entirely in charge of NORAD on 9/11, that's a pity because it seems slightly unbelievable that he'd be working each and every thing from his White homestead workplace.

AMERICA HAS NOT EVER HAD NOR EVER WILL HAVE "UNCONTESTED AIRSPACE" !!!!! As an American, I should hope that whatever 2nd or less world nation that produced the **** for brains to ask such a question has the opportunity to do a better job. TERRORIST are even on the Internet. AREN'T YOU. My hope for you is that YOUR Government can respond to an unforeseeable event in 60 seconds or less. THE SAME AM MOUNT OF TIME THAT IT COULD TAKE THE U.S. TO LEVEL YOUR CAPITAL.

In the past hijackers have not crashed airplanes into buildings. The military never even trained for that type of scenario. What would you have said if they scrabbled planes and shot them down before they hit the buildings. People would have called them murders and that they should have just negotiated with the hijackers and all the hostage would have lived. Before 9/11 people where told if you are on a plane being hijacked just sit still, do what they tell you , and do not resist. Now it is fight for your life.

Almost as pathetic as your spelling, but anyway, prove they "gave uncontested air space". What can someone do when a plane is going over 500 miles per hour?
The US screwed up. We had our pants down and we got spanked.
If you knew what you were talking about, you'd know that the Defense Department DID indeed scramble fighter jets, but it was too little, too late.
Do your homework and quit listening to tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theory goinks!

because you need a good reason to invade other countries. just like pearl harbor FDR knew about soon enough in advance to prepare for but he wanted to get involved WWII so he let it happen so that he could get the house, senate, and public behind him so he could go to war. plus the bush family is close friends with the bin la din family. all bin la dins in the u.s. were secretly flown out of the country days after 9/11.

I've reported this question. All of these stupid conspiracy theories have been dealt with over and over again - we all know the answers to these questions.
We had 14 fighters on alert that morning, all over the country. Even after the planes are hijacked, the immediate response isn't to shoot them down. Planes get hijacked all the time (do a wiki search on "Plane Hijackings" to get a partial list), and usually everybody ends up unharmed. Nobody expected them to fly them into buildings.
Once a plane hit a building, then the fighters scrambled, but by then it was too late. It was all over in about a half hour. The planes had their transponders off, so they were nearly impossible to track. Fighters were prepared to shoot down flight 93 if it got near the white house, but even the 9/11 commission believes that would have been too tall of a task for people to pull off.
The fighters on alert were trained to deal with longrange Russian bombers. NORAD wasn't designed to search and destroy planes from within.
Please, do me a favor and stop asking these questions. A few conspiracy theorists keep posting the same crap over and over again. All you do is make yourself seem stupid. If you needed an answer, I gave it to you. Please, accept it and move on.
