Rabbits can sleep with their eyes open, so perhaps your b/f's rabbit was asleep.
Rabbits are good at "staring" something down -- in the wild, their very lives depend on split-second reflexes.

my rabbit blinks now and again and i can properly see it, especially when he's tired, but they dont have eyelids

They have very thin membranes over their eyes which are used for blinking. The film is probaby so thin and fine that you cannot really notice it.
