I have spent almost a year now writing my life story. My daughter read the first 40 pages about 10 months ago and told me that she was really impressed with it and couldn't wait until I finished it so she could read it all. I have now written over 400 pages and have gone over the first 200 pages twice to make sure that it's readable. I have done my best to make it a little humurous, but what I want now, is a few people, who are readers and have the time to read it, to go over some selected parts of the book and give me an honest opinion.
If you are interested could you please reply, and I will e-mail you with 10 or 20 pages.

I'll take a go at it. I enjoy reading and I (unfortunately) tend to be painfully honest! lol!
Sometimes writing is less for the general public and more for one's self. Don't be dissuaded. I recently read an INCREDIBLY good book by a local author. He paid to have the book published (approx. 500 copies) and has given some as gifts, sold some, etc., but it was one of the best books I've ever read.

Think you're right to seek the opinions of other people in assessing your book but I don't think Yahoo Answers is the way to go. People may answer you with dismissive / flippant / over-kind / over-cruel replies.
People who do it for a living won't want to give you an assessment for free.
I'd suggest you either seek out a local writer's group / evening class where people will give you constructive criticism but where you can also evaluate whether the advice comes from a benign / neutral / informed source or -
- myy best advice to you would be to contact The Arvon Foundation, (founded by Ted Hughes, supported by the Arts Council) which runs short intensive courses in isolated historic houses in lovely countryside locations, taught by professional (often illustrious) writers. If on the dole, you can apply for a grant. If you type in 'Arvon Foundation, Sheepwash', you should enter their website. You could ask for a brochure to be sent to you. There will, undoubtedly, be a 'writing your autobiography' course amongst the hundreds of courses they run -
[However, having now gone back to the answers you've received whilst I've been typing this, maybe I'm too cynical - actually looks like you've got people who are prepared to give you good honest feedback.] I'd still look into Arvon as well, though.

May I suggest that you don't send your life story, even 10-20 pages, to some strangers who type away on Y!A. You just don't know us or what somebody might do with something important to you. Or it should be... very important, especially the beginning, since beginnings are important. I know, I keep using the same descriptive word...
Find a friend or acquaintance you already know in the flesh who you trust. Another family member if you have one, a friend of your daughter's perhaps... but not a complete cyber stranger, no. Okay?

10 or 20 pages will not give your reader a true insight to the whole content of the book. I'm sure its really good but you will find it difficult to get into print unless you are either famous or have done something outrageous, heroic or have lived through unbelievable trauma.

Television is produced to the cheapest common denominator - i.e., the average IQ of everyone, whereas a written booklet is written to the best common denominator

sure i wouldn't mind reading. I love reading.
Suggestion: you could give a short summary about the book too like a blurb.
