i just got a free imac, dont know how obsolete it is, but probably not the newest version. I plug it in, and all i get is a white screen. Am I going to need some kind of boot or startup disk, and if so, where would i get one of those? Is there some other thing wrong with this thing, or is there some button I dont know about?

Look to see if you can find a copy of Mac OS (the operating system) if there is something wrong with the operating system then the computer should start up with the cd. more than likley it is the operating system. find out what generation your imac is and find out what is the latest version of Mac OS can be installed in it

If you're getting a white screen, your graphics card or the screen is shot.

Which iMac is it? The old G3 based color case versions?

If all you get is a white screen, there's more wrong with it than just needing software installed.
