Bill, you are wrong. Once a territory/area/state had approved joining the union by it's legislature, and then was admitted to the union by the votes of the states already in the union, then that area became a state.

Do, not confuse the formal name of a state for it's actual being a state. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is indeed a state, it just happens that we generally refer to it by it's shortened name Massachusetts instead of it's complete name, Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The example I like to use besides the states with commonwealth in their name is Rhode Island. The actual/formal name of that state is Rhode Island and Providence Plantation.

Perhaps you should have read the wiki you cited, as it explains this in detail. To quote,
