If so, can you tell me why you persist in believing this?

If not, any hypothesis about how such a large group of people can be so misled?

People always believe what supports their point of view, on both sides. Republicans are more likely to believe Saddam was involved with 9/11 than Democrats (although, assuredly, there are plenty of Democrats who believe the same thing), because it is more in line with their view on the Iraq War. Similarly, Democrats are more likely to be uneducated on issues that are important to their side, like global warming. The few polls that have been taken show Democrats incredibly uneducated on global warming. Some of the myths that believed by a majority of Democrats include:

Global warming is so fast that you can actually "feel" that the summers or winters are warmer than they used to be.

Global warming caused Hurricane Katrina to be more powerful.

If policies are not changed in the near future, global warming will cause New York City to flood in the next century.

This isn't to argue that Democrats are dumber than Republicans, only to argue that both sides are equally stupid. Since the media does the polling and the media biases towards the left, you see more polls that make fun of the idiocy of the right (regarding things like saddam & 9/11, or whether the Earth is really 4.5 billion years old). But certainly other polls do show the same stupidity on the left.

No party has the moral high ground on the other.

I'm not sure I know anyone, Rep or Dem that thinks he had anything to do with it. CBS/NYT poll...hmmm. I don't think the NYT would poll people in say Oregon because they as well as CBS are in NYC. So you could probably say 1 in 3 New Yorkers think that he had something to do with it. There's your answer... New Yorkers will say anything to not be bothered by the press. The story doen't say how many of the whopping 1035 adults asked were republican. You said "such a large group" even if it was the maxium it would only be 400 republicans. You think 400 is a large group and represents every Republican? Not hardly. Are there even 400 Republicans in NYC?

I don't know if Saddam had "anything" to do with 9/11. I doubt anyone knows if he had any involvement what so ever.
I don't believe he was instrumental in the actual planning or execution - however, I don't believe for a moment that if he had prior knowledge he would have told the United States.
I do believe that he was himself a terrorist - in the truest sense - and that he supported terrorism in general with his regime and policies. And I further believe he would have perpetrated the events of 9/11 or something similar himself if he had had the opportunity.
The world is a better place without people like Saddam. Too bad there seems to be so damned many of them.

Don't forget to mention the 1 in 4 Democrats that still believe that.

However, you are correct. Saddam had zero to do with 9/11. So I guess I'm one of the other 3 Republicans.

It would also be interesting if they had run in this same poll, how many Dems and Republicans believe Bush behind 9/11.

No, Saddam had nothing to do with 9-11 directly. He was clearly not opposed to Al Qaeda directly. He did not, however, pursue the suppression of Al Quaeda either.

I am not impressed with the state of knowledge of the electorate on either side of any of the issues that are being discussed here.

I am not one of 2 in 5 Republicans who thinks Saddam Hussein had to do with 9/11. I am not even a Republican.

NO! Al Queda did it! To some people Saddam and Al Queda are one in the same.

Don't forget the socialists that still say America is responsible!

I think they still 'believe' it mainly because they are unwilling and unable to admit how stupid they are, and how manipulated they were.

I was for the war before I was against it, and when the real facts started coming out, I admitted to myself that I was misled. Pity that those who still support the war and this criminal government cannot muster the internal fortitude to admit their mistake, or to evaluate the entire course of the war rationally and come to the obvious conclusion that our nation was duped into a pointless war.

UPDATE: Well, Angel, there is your answer, right above mine. FALLEN provided it for you. He cannot admit how he was misled, so he goes off on non-related issues about Saddam Hussein. There is your answer, straight from one of those obvious Drank-A-Tanker-Full-Of-KoolAid Reublicans.

he was not attacked for 911, he was attacked because both republicans and democrats thought he had weopens of mass destruction. also, he would not let the u.n. inspectors complete access to the places they needed to go. however, it is well known that he harbored terrorists. he was asking to be attacked.
