I was watching divorce court today and some lady actually married a guy that was STILL MARRIED to someone else. My question is how is that possible? I thought when you apply for a marriage license they check on things like that? If anyone knows how something like that could happen I would like to know. It was just mind blowing to me.

They may check within the state you are in, but not nation and world wide. Especially in places like Las Vegas. They give out thousands of marriage licenses each week and never check.

Depends on the state and if here in Texas you are supposed to apply for a marriage license, someone was apparently off their job because this was a major slip up. Or it could be that the mans 1st marriage was not really official.

No, they don't check. They have too many things to do. Besides if it's a real common name, it's possible that two people may share the same b-day as well.

I don't know unless maybe it is a state and not a national or international data base or perhaps he had a different name or alias.

polygomy is not that rare -- apparently licenses aren't
cross referenced unless legal issues arise ?
