If you're under 30 and not a liberal, you don't have a heart.
If you're over 30 and not a conservative, you don't have a brain.

VeggieTart: "liberals could be expected to more readily accept new social, scientific or religious ideas". This justifies the statement. Liberals are more easily manipulated and brainwashed like children.

I've used that one many times in this forum...only my version is: If your 20 and not a liberal, you have no heart...if you're 40 and still a liberal you have no brains.....

Actually, a study shows that liberals are smarter at any age--or maybe just more adaptive and less knee-jerk.
A great quote from an LA Times article: "Based on the results, [a researcher] said, liberals could be expected to more readily accept new social, scientific or religious ideas

It's a catchy slogan from another era, out of context people use it all the time to prove their point, but usually just prove they have no clue, since the context and rhetoric of the times has changed, as have the values espoused by each side. liberal values of 30 years ago are now conservative talking points, liberal values like equal rights, civil rights, neo-cons now claim to want for others, when 30 years ago they did not want them here.

Ronin, If you are over 30, you can't be trusted...at least that's what they told me in the 60's. People are as variable on politics as they are in everything else. For instance, I am a fifties Democrat. Meaning conservative with strong family values and belief that America is a wonderful Nation.
We help other, we don't start wars and we are getting the Peace Corps together...would I call myself conservative now? Hell no! Them folks is crazy~I'm 57.

The final stanza is "If you're over 60, you don't draw lines in the dirt and you've got both a heart and a brain."!
Take it from an ol' Geezer, there's no truth in the first two stanzas! LOL

No there isn't. I have friends on both sides of the fence and while we don't see eye to eye on all things, we can discuss things in a civilized manor.
My friends are all ages and they all have brains and heart or else they wouldn't be my friends.
I refuse to get in to the name calling and venom spewing that goes on here as do a lot of my friends.

yes ... but its often taken out of context
he was talking about the ballance between the 2, and that we need both for the system to work ... and he also said democracy is a very poor form of government --- but it's better than any other form we have been able to come up with.
(also consider that the liberals and conservatives he was talking about don't resemble the libs and cons of today)

It's all relative. "Conservative" means conserving the status quo and tradition, which old people are more likely to do.
The conservatives of today are the liberals of yesterday

Its fairly accurate...but the actual saying is "if you're under 30 and not a liberal, you don't have a heart, if your over 30 and not a conservative, you don't have a life"
