I was recently told that stem cells can be obtained from an adult and used to create an enzyme that will turn off the cancer gene. An RN was telling me about a limited study done.

I have a dear friend who is dying of cancer and has a 4 year old. If stem cell technology were available to help her, then I would say it's a Godsend.

Blessed Be.

I read a book on stem cell research last year and I'm dead set against embrionic stem cell research, there's entirely too much that can go wrong with it.

However, adult stem cells are a different tiger altogether and I'm very much for it.

Recently heard a report that adult stem cells are being transplanted from the olfactory region in the face and there have been reports of paraplegic persons walking again. These are being done in Thailand and South America. The U.S. doesn't want anything to do with them yet. However, the report is over 100 people have done this and over 50% of them are Americans who heard about it and contacted Medical facilities overseas to get it done.

There are current clinical trials going on here in Southern California for heart patients, again, with their own stem cells. The trials are brand new and I haven't heard anything from the trials yet. It will be a long time before the papers are written, however, I am encouraging my cousin to get into one. It shows great promise.

I am not a scientist. I'm not even that well informed on the matter, or the process. But what I do know is, if it requires HUMAN FETUSES in any way it CANNOT happen. Now people will say "oh they were getting an abortion anyways" blah blah blah. No that is naive. I am 100% for stem cell research if it comes from animals. But if you need human fetuses to do your research, then no. You cannot do it. I'm sorry but that isn't right. If stem cell research is 100% legal and scientists need fetuses, you think that eventually rich sick people won't pay money for the stem cells? Well where do those cells come from? A human fetus. You think the mother of that fetus is giving it away for free when a rich person literaly wants to save their own life? How much would someone pay to continue living? Im sure it would be a substantial amount. So the mother sells the right to remove the fetus to a lab. And I'm sure you don't need me to spell out the entire situation from there. Long story short, humans end up getting farmed and sold like a commodity and that is wrong. That's why stem cell research involving human fetuses should not be allowed in any way shape or form. Stem cell research involving animals is fine.

Considering that the stem-cells are from the IVF discard pile and thus would never be destined for implantation and development into fetuses & then babies, why throw out such treasure? As long as the ill-informed religious zealots continue to confuse embryonic discards with aborted fetuses, then we're still in for a bumpy ride. Imagine a laboratory, OK? Imagine a dozen or more Petri dishes, each with its little blob of cellular stuff, OK? Imagine a gloved hand picking these dishes up and heading for the disposal chute..... Where are the preachers then? Are they going to huddle around the disposal chute and conduct funerals for the microscopic blobs? Or will some preacher with a Parkinson's wife begin to see a little daylight at the end of the mine-shaft and allow that there may well be immortality of a very special sort in that Petri dish...a living wife repaired thru intelligence gathered from researching thru the blob that would otherwise be thrown away. No-brainer, right?

Actually, adult stem cell research has done alot to cure several diseases. I'm all for Adult stem cell research which has already proven itself and a more promising future than fetal stem cell research. The link below will provide lots of info for you.

I am for it 100%.

The cells used are just that, basic cells.

I also think the embyros that are destroyed when they are not used for IVF should be used for research.

Edit:

Stem cell research is not done with fetuses or babies!

They are done with embyronic cells. It's cellular.

There is no flesh and blood baby or fetus involved.

These cells don't have blood vessals, organs, bones or anything else.

They are cells in a petri dish or tube.

I favor it. I believe there are a lot of misconceptions about the sources. It can also be retrieved from the umbilical cords in live births.

I think people should do a little research before they jump off the deep end. (That applies to the president, too.)

Even after the research is legalized (and eventually it WILL be), it will take years to formulate the solutions that can cure some diseases.

In the beginning I was dead set against stem cell research. But as the years have passed and I've tried to become informed I have changed my mind.
We need to use our God given intelligence and keep up the research!

pro stem cell research. They could harvest stem cells from cord blood too.

you are going to get a lot of answers....

I am for it. As long as the donors of the stem cell are ok with it. It could potentially save a lot of lives
