I am taking birth control and I skip taking the iron pills because I don't seem to have the symptoms of anemia and I was thinking of throwing them out, but then I thought that my boyfriend who suffers from anemia could use them instead of them going to waste - is this legitimate?

I am sure they have iron in them.

Ok, So since most of the birth control pills out there just have placebos for a week I would assume that your doctor thought YOU could use the iron, that is why the doctor prescribed those birth control pills to you. All of your "active" birth control pills probably have a small amount of iron as well, and your "filler" pills are just a continuation of that. I think you should be taking those iron pills and your boyfriend needs to verify his iron needs with his doctor, if he doesn't feel the need to see a doctor I'd say just make sure he eats all his dark green leafy veggies (spinach) and I would also say no on the over the counter iron supplements until he has spoken with the doctor about it, you shouldn't take those unless absolutely needed.

Besides, how are the seven really low dose iron pills in your birth control pack going to really help him throughout a whole month??

I used to take the same kind of pills too, and YES those ARE iron pills. I took Loestrin Fe 1/20. The Fe stands for iron. Not all birth control pills have placebo/sugar pills. Some really do have Iron pills.

Anyway...although it's probably ok for you to give the pills to your boyfriend, I think it would be a MUCH better idea for him to see his doctor to treat his anemia. Maybe simple diet changes and taking a multi-vitamin is all he needs. But he should definitely check to make sure his anemia isn't being caused by something more severe...like a blood disorder.

Just FYI for all the people above, some brands of birth control pills DO have iron in the off week section of pills. However, I don't advise giving them to your boyfriend. Just go the store and buy him some iron supplement. Or feed him some spinach.

Yes, it is just fine. If you have been taking the loestrin24 for a month as directed, there is nothing to worry about because you will be fully protected at this point in time. Spotting is not unusual while on birth control but if it happens continually, be sure to mention this to your gynecologist. Take care.

What iron pills? Birth control packs don't contain iron pills. You were misinformed. Those spacer pills at the end of the month have no medicinal value.

Usually those are just sugar pills, no iron in them whatsoever. I wouldn't think it's safe anyway, so I would advise not to give them to him. And what does anemia have to do with it anyway?

I'm sorry, but your 100% mistaken.

Those aren't iron pills. Their placebo's and therefore only sugar. Their only there to remind you to take your pill.

You shouldn't give any of your prescribed medicine, even placebo's to anyone.

If your boyfriend is anemic, then he should be following his doctor's orders and taking the supplements reccommended by his doctor.

Those are sugar pills, placebos. They are there so you remember to take your pills every day. They don't have iron in them....
