This of course is a hypothetical question. There have been some incredible ones:
Mel Blount
Mike Haynes
Darrel Greene --- Fastest man in NFL until he started to draw social security
Deion Sanders --- QB's were afraid to throw to his side of the field
Champ Bailey
Everson Walls

How would you rank them {there may be others that I missed}

No doubt Deion Sanders. The guy shut down an entire side of the field. And when people did elect to throw his way he returned a lot of them for td's.

The best shut down cornerback in the NFL was whoever was facing the Bear's QB Bobby Douglas that week. Dude couldn't hit the broad side of a red barn....they only kept him around for his rushing. Really, it's prolly Deion Sanders + you get an extra added bonus with him in the game as a punt returner. MONEY. Love his game, hate the mouth, hate the sunglasses & chains and prime time, love his taste in men's clothing (sometimes).....emphasis added on sometimes....other times he looks like a mustard turd.

I'd have to go with Deion Sanders. I've never seen another player who would shut down literally half of the field.

Unfortunately, his ego brought along too much baggage for anyone but Jerry Jones to deal with.

Dick "NIGHTTRAIN" Lane - The Speed, interception ability, and he cold hit harder than a train in the night!

"NEON" Deion "PRIME TIME" Sanders - Pure speed

Lester Hayes - See Deion & plus the stickum looked sick hangin off his niform.

Rod Woodson gets honorable mention!
In that order.

The two best aren't even on your list. Do some research. The best 'cover' corners ever were Dick Lane and Lester Hayes.

Charles Woodson was pretty good too. He is the only primarily defensive player to ever win the Heisman award.
