BE CAREFUL! While you can fill the reservior with the hydraulic shafts in any position, DON'T TAKE OFF THE RESERVIOR CAP UNTIL YOU'VE BLOCKED UP THE MOTOR.

Many outboards have a little flip-up brace that lets you raise the motor a little, then latch it in place to hold the motor up. If your motor doesn't have one, then lift the motor up a little and use a short piece of 2x4 between the motor and transom plate to hold it. This takes the motor's weight off the hydraulic shafts so there's no pressure in the system or reservior.

Think about jacking up your car with a hydraulic jack, then quickly pulling the plug in the jack to add more oil - what 'ya think is gonna happen? Pulling the plug on the motor's tilt/trim reserviour with the motor's weight on the hydraulic arms will probably cause the plug to ricochet off your forhead like a bullet, then fill your eyes with hydraulic oil, then smash your fingers, hand, or arm between the motor and transom mount as it comes slamming down - not good.

A few motors claim to have an anti-drop check valve in the system - don't count on it - be safe and block up the motor before doing anything on the hydraulic system.

Doesn't matter. Top off the reservoir and replace the cap. Cycle the trim to bleed all the air into the reservoir and top it off again. Repeat until all air has been expelled from the hydraulic system.
