Lenovo.

Used to be the IBM PC division.

A bit more expensive, but you have to decide how much keeping your data intact is worth to you:

The laptop still worked and the data was good.

You should consider what you want to use the laptop for to help you decide and figure out your budget.

If you want to do word processing, browse the web and send e-mail and only use the laptops an hour or so every few days then that is quite different from a power user on the road that needs a long lasting battery and the latest and greatest with the fastest CPU and a huge display.

If only e-mail and web browsing and the laptop is always plugged in then you can buy a refurbished laptops for $300 and find one by typing used laptops or refurbished laptops in google and checking out the first few vendors that show up.

If you want a new laptop and are cost conscious type cheap laptops in google and check out the first few vendors that come up.

If you stick with HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo (formerly IBM), and Toshiba, who are the top five manufacturers of laptops then you can't go wrong. Each company makes millions of laptops each year and they are all Billion dollar companies with organizations in place to design, sell and support their products. Dell does the most marketing, so is the best known to consumers, but if you were to ask my techs who have been servicing laptops for years they are not the best made. IBM and Toshiba are the best made with HP next and are very well know and respected in the corporate world. However, this is relative as most parts are made by third parties and the laptops are often built by third parties.

I have heard mixed review about Vista ... major issue seems to be that not all drivers are available. So, if you are using any special devices or software make sure there is a Vista driver available. If not, Microsoft has sold millions of copies so most people are fine with it.

Dell is a very good computer! I just picked up a Inspiron 9400 series for my business and absolutely love it. The unit has 6 usb ports, fire wire port, dvd+rw drive plus many others to mention. Most of the new Dell computers are not made of plastic either, it's made with magnesium composit alloy which is very durable. As far as Windows Vista goes, I think it is a great OS. I am able to run all of my programs on it without any issues plus it's more user friendly and prettier than XP in my opinion. Gateway, HP, Sony, and Toshiba's are also good notebooks to consider. Look for the best warranty plans and stay away from the lesser known brands.

You want quality: Sony
You want big savings: HP, Gateway
You want something in between: Dell, Compal, Asus
You want the best brand: Falcon Northwest

Is Vista any good? I know for sure Vista is way better than XP as long as you don't own a program that's not supported by Vista.

In my opinion, the best computer brand is Toshiba. You should not get a Dell because they are unreliable and their customer service is the worst. No, Windows Vista is not any good. Windows XP is the best Operating System. I would highly recommend a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092.

Don't even buy Windows Vista! its not worth your computer, or your money!!!My professional opinion is to get a Macbook or a Macbook Pro. has iTunes built in, user friendly, Its way easier to get around then windows Vista, once you start using OS X you will never think about Windows again! Both models have a built in webcam and microphone so you can talk to your friends, comes with a remote so when you do presentations you can change slides with it, and it works when you watch movies. for about $1,100 You can buy a basic Macbook. For a macbook pro, it will cost you around $2,000. You get what you pay for. 2 year warranty is standered, and y,ou get a free printer, and if you are a college student, you can also get a free iPod nano (the one that just came out, it also now supports video playback)
