I would ask them but they keep putting my on hold and now I can't get through at all!!
My plan is, someone suggested uninstalling their software, but I don't want to be paying them any more money! So i'm going to cancel DD at the bank tomorrow.
Can they cut off my internet access?

Hi, AOL is the worst, they make money off people like you that may not have enough computer experience. BUT dont be alarmed, thats why everyone is here, to help.
So, lets move on:
You want to cancel AOL? Go ahead. AOL is not the only inernet subcriber in the US. Try Verizon. I heard their DSL thing is pretty cool.
Wanna go faster in the net and pay more too? Go ahead. Try RoadRunner from Time Warner Cable. Is 5x faster than DSL and neither your phone or your TV cable will feel different. Its pretty Cool !!!!

Now, whatever you do, Keep using FireFox. FireFox has less viruses than Explorer. FireFox was created by a teenage kid who once worked for Netscape and he decided to make a better internet surfing software.

Good luck and make sure to contact AOL. They'll want to keep you as a costumer so expect Lots of "cries" from their reps something along the lines of:
"You wanna cancel us? why ? dont you like our nice little buttons on the screen? dont u like the 'you got mail' jingle ? Why? WHYYYYY ????? ok. We'll give you 2 months FREE of charge hon' think about it. Think about the savings !!! blah, blah, blah,,... DONT BUY INTO IT unless, you know, they give you say 6 MONTHS FREE or something cool like that. Meantime. PLEASE LEAVE THE AOL HELL NOW !!!

bye !

Firstly...if you cancel your DD at the bank then make sure your not still in contract with AOL.....
AOL will stop being your ISP but, as everyone has said, their are many other ISP out there....
Here, in England, if we want to change our Broadband supplier then we have to get a MAC (migration authorisation code) from them. I don't know if it's the same where you are.
Anyway, cancel your DD and tell AOL you've done this..(go on-line and use their 'live help rather than phoning them up).
Join another broadband provider and then uninstall the AOL software.
Secondly..i have been with AOL for over four years (albeit via a DSL)and i have never had a problem with them(touch wood)....i always use their on-line 'live help' to speak to them and they sort out any problems straight away...I can't understand why people hate AOL..unless it's just crap in the states....

If AOL is your service provider (ISP), then cancelling them will lose you your Internet access. If you are using dial-up, then they are your ISP. If they are not your ISP, then you will be paying someone else (your cable company, phone company, etc) for your Internet service. If that is the case, you can cancel the AOL and still get to the Internet through IE or Firefox.

You are correct that just uninstalling the software will not stop them from charging you. You have to cancel the service to stop the bill.

If you are using dial-up through AOL, you can replace them with another dial-up service, such as Netscape or Juno. Netscape usually run between $7-10 a month, depending on if you hit one of their "sales" times ($6.95 a month).

They can only cut your access if you buy your service through them; i.e. if the only way you get online is to dial up directly through their software.

If you have DSL or cable internet that is provided through another company, they can do nothing about that.

But uninstalling the software won't stop them from sending you a bill, any more than not using the phone will stop the phone company from sending you the bill every month.

You need a proxy server of some kind. AOL has been doing this for you, if you have a cable modem or DSL then check with these guys about getting hooked up. They can tell you what default setting you need to change in your Internet connection wizzard.

If your only Internet service is through AOL, cancelling your service will definitely cut off your Internet access.

of course they can, if you are getting internet access through them and you are not paying them any longer, they will cut it off.

but why are you paying for AOL? It sucks. Try cable or DSL. With cable or DSL you can be online and talk on your phone at the same time.
