Well Democracy is a type of government and communism is a social economic model. Despite their non-overlapping nature, they are completely incompatable.
Democracy is run by the people with the idea of doing whatever the people want. Unfortunately since average joe is a complete idiot and totally unqualified to run a country, this results is essentially an organized state of anarchy, that only (and temporarily) benefits whatever mindset is held by 51% of the populace at any given time.
Communism is a sub-system of socialism, the main point of which is that all people share ownership of everything. Unfortunately, greed is a large part of human nature and average joe doesn't like to share, he wants it all for himself. And socialism does not reward extra-effort the way capitaism does, so average joe is not motivated to do well and serve society to the best of his abilities. Because, once again, average joe is too stupid to realize that everything he does to support society comes back to support him ten-fold.

You question is somewhat incorrect, Democracy and Communism are 'apples and oranges'. Democracy is a government system, while Communism is more of an economic system. A better question is what is the difference between Capitalism and Communism.
At its core, the big difference is that in capitalist systems, the economy is driven by individuals striving to gain capital. The assumption is that each person will try their hardest and that the 'cream will rise to the top'. While Communism (as written by Marx) is the idea that all capital is held by all people and that everyone works for the general betterment of the group.
The problem with Capitalism is that capital (wealth) tends to collect in a small number of individuals, who in turn begin to act to protect themselves and their own capital to the detriment of the rest of the population.
The problem with Communism is that not everyone does work for the betterment of the population. Because no one owns anything, they don't feel responsible, it becomes a society where everyone 'does enough' to get things done, but no more. And, the leaders begin to take a larger share on the justification that they are 'more important'.
Neither system is perfect. Communism in its purest form *sounds* nice, but isn't realistic. Meanwhile, Capitalism is more realistic, but is likewise subject to abuse. The best system seems to be what we have now, Regulated Capitalism.
Back to your original question of Democracy vs Communism, the Communism we see in many placed is really Dictatorship using the Communism name.

Do mean the difference between democracy and communism, or democrats and communists? Because 1 has a pretty big difference, the other not so much.
Communism is totalitarian, or martial rule. The government owns everything, and provides for all your needs.
Democracy is a form of voting to decide the issue. We live in a form of republic. Which means we elect a representative, who places our vote as a proxy. We have mucked this republic really bad, because we made it a career. So these b-wipes no longer represent me and you, they only represent themselves.
That is why the lie so hard during election time, and we continue to re-elect them, so maybe we are as stupid as the think we are.
Edit/// Sahara, democracy by definition discriminates. It doesn't allow for what is right or wrong, it is being ruled by a mob. Think of it this way, the majority of he people in the United States drives Chevy's. So they decide you must drive one also, because they like it. You are now FORCED to abide by the majority, you have no choice. In a Republic, our representatives are supposed to debate these rules, present them to the next house, to then be presented to the executive, and OK'd by the court. You have three chances to change the outcome of the bill, and more representation.

Democracy is a government ruled by the people through voting. Communism, not to be confused with socialism, is a collective form of self-governance that comes through the will of the people abolishing government. A true communist society has no money, and no leaders. The world has never had a true communist government in modern times, only communist societies.

Democracy - People to act and choose for themselves
Communists - Leaders choose Themselves to take care of their people.
Both for People only but Communists has an edge over, Leader being Risky Responsibility Holder, where people comment for wrongs always and won't support Leader at times ( Self Less ratio is More ).

In Democracy the people get to make most of the choices as far as voting and such. But in a communistic society your life is decided by the ruler of the country.

Democracy is a form of government, literally rule by the people. Democratic governments typically uphold free elections, and exercise the will of the people. Communism is a form of government with a single party adhering to Marxism-Leninism, Maoism or a similar philosophy.

There is a huge difference.
Democracy is government by the people for the people. It does not discriminate. It is fairer to more people.
Communism is about having a totalitarian regime that dictates what we all do. Everyone is supposedly equal but it doesn't work. There isn't a choice for what you want to do with your life. Life is boring.
