It's not all about pit bulls and I don't think the view is that pit bulls are the only ones who attack.
I am a victim of a dog attack, I was attacked by my own dog which I owned for 3 years before the attack and there was no previous sign or warning that the dog may attack. The question that is asked most often when I discuss my attack is, "what kind of dog was it?"
Statistically Pitbulls are the most common breed in terms of fatal attacks on humans. Followed distantly by Rottweilers and German Shepherds. Dogs of any breed can attack, though the attacks seem to be much more prevelant in particular breeds and pitbulls top the list. Especially when you seperate the attacks by severity.

It is not an attack on what you call "rights to own dogs". It is a response to the improper care and control of these animals. As far as I know, no one has the right to own a dog. It is a privilege if you can afford to have a dog.
We have all heard or witnessed attacks by dogs that where otherwise normal lovable dogs. I can't recall an instance when a dog attacked while the owner was present. It is when these animals get out, that is the risk. So if you want a pit bull (or any other animal) you should be required to protect the community. My neighbor had 5 dogs 2 pits, 2 rots and a german shep. He thought it was perfectly fine to keep all 5 in the back yard. The problem I had was the fence was only 38" high. Those dogs were out everyday. One attacked the next door neighbor.
Your "right" to own a animal that could be dangerous is exceeded by the rights of the community to be safe in their own back yard from unprovoked attack.

I don't think there's any good research one way or the other to suggest whether or not the dogs are the problem or the people who own them.
However, in many of the attack cases, the dogs have had a history of violence which the owners chose to ignore. So ultimately, the question becomes one of making sure that owners are going to be responsible BEFORE the dogs become problems. Maybe we ought to make sure that people have to take classes before owning a potentially dangerous breed of dog.

Nobody is attacking your right to own dogs. Common sense tells us that breeding dogs that inherently fight is not a good practice. This includes pit bulls, but is not exclusive. Also, most dogs reflect the type of training by the owner....if you don't know how to train a dog to be safe around people, you shouldn't own one.

I have a boxer I had 2 they wanted to fight, I now have one, the thing is I have a dog park we use in WV and the only dogs that generally start fights are the pit bulls. In fact My dog was bitten 4 times in a year, 2 of those bites were pit bulls.
P.S. if you go to a dog park it is quite possible to have a dog fight because many people have dogs they have not socialized and will try to be dominate, which means do fight.

I don't think that breeds should be outlawed. But, there are people out there who breed dogs to be attack dogs. The breeding is done deliberately, and the training is done deliberately. These dogs are lethal weapons, and people are putting anyone near their house at risk of being injured or killed by them. With the right to own dogs comes the responsibility to own dogs. Too many people are abusing their right.

An attack on personal rights, for sure. That is how it's done. They restrict the rights on an unpopular activity and that will extend to others but they never see the connection.

pit bulls can be dangerous if bred and trained irresponsibly. It's the same for many other breeds, however, pit bulls are the most notorious for human attacks.
