Let numbers be x and y
x + y = 94
x + (3x + 1) = 94
4x + 1 = 94
4x = 93
x = 93/4
y = 94 - 93/4
y = 376/4 - 93/4
y = 283/4
Numbers are 93/4 and 283/4
ie 23¼ and 70¾

Write an equation for each part. Let the two numbers be x and y. So:
x + y = 94
3x + 1 = y
Substitute the first in the second for y, so:
x + (3x+1) = 94
4x + 1 =94
4x = 93
x = 93/4 which is not a whole number, so there are no whole number solutions. I leave you to figure out y.
A better problem would be where the second is 1 less than 2 times the first. That goes to:
x + (2x-1) = 94
3x - 1 =94
3x=93
x=31
An alternative is the second is 2 more than 3 times the first. Work that one yourself.
These were done quick, check my math.

This problem is a system of two equations in two variables. When you have as many equations as variables, you can solve in terms of one variable and plug that back into the other equation to get the answer. So:
"The sum of two numbers is 94" x + y = 94
"The second is 1 more than 3 times the first" y = 3x + 1
Solve the first for y: y = 94 - x
Plug that into the other equation:
94 - x = 3x + 1
Solve the resulting equation for x. Then plug the result back into "y = 94 - x" to get the value for y.

Call the numbers x and y.
x+y=94
y=3x+1
Substitute 3x+1 for y in the first equation and solve for x:
x+3x+1=94
4x=93
x=93/4
Substitute 93/4 for x in the second equation and solve for y:
y=3(93/4)+1
y=283/4
So, the two numbers are 23 1/4 and 70 3/4.

x + y = 94
y = 3x + 1
we want to isolate either the x or y, so
x + (3x + 1) = 94
4x + 1 = 94
4x = 93
x = 93/4 = 23.25
y = 3(23.25) + 1 = 69.75 + 1 = 70.75

a + b = 94 A
3a +1 = b B
Take A and apply B to it
a+ 3a + 1 = 94
4a = 94 -1
4a = 93
a = 93/4
a = 23.25 C
Combine B and C
3a +1 = b
3*23.25 +1 = b
69.75 +1 = b
b = 70.75 D
Combine C and D into A to verify
a + b = 94
23.25 + 70.75 = 94

Set up 2 equations for the problem using the descriptions.
Call one number x and the other y.
x + y = 94
x = 3y + 1
Solve one for a variable... x = 3y + 1
Now plug that value for x into the other equation
(3y + 1) + y = 94
4y + 1 = 94
4y = 93 ========> y = 23.25
Now plug that back in to the first equation you used
x = 3y - 1
x = 3(23.25) + 1
x = 70.75

lets say first # is x and the second is y
so x + y = 94
the second, y is 3times more than x.
so that is y = 3x
now u know what y is, plug in 3x in place of y in the first equation (x + y = 94)
so u get x + 3x = 94 combine like terms 4x = 94
divide both sides by 4 and the x is 23.5.
now u know wat x is, plug it into y = 3x. u get y = 3(23.5)
y = 70.5
70.5 + 23.5 = 94
hope dis helps. :)

X+(3X+1)=94
4x+1=94
4x=94-1
4x=93
x=93/4
x=23.25
23.25+(23.25(3)+1)=94
23.25+(69.75+1)=94
23.25+70.75=94
Just write out what is in the problem.
