2 weeks ago I received a note in the mail that I was to move my mailbox because a carrier had tripped on my stairs.

My mailbox is located 5 stairs up (not steep stairs) from my driveway. It is in an area where the stairs stop and there is a flat surface. I don’t use the mail slot that was built into the side of my house as it bothered my dogs and therefore I set up an easier alternative for that mail lady that has worked for years. Please keep in mind that EVERY house in the neighborhood has stairs leading to their house and a mail slot in the front door which is where their mail is delivered.

After receiving the notice I called the post office to discuss the matter. Over the course of the 2 weeks I called 5 times and my questions were never answered nor my calls returned. My mail has now been withheld for a week while I am still trying to talk to someone that knows what is going on.

I dont want to move my mailbox.
Any help or advice would be appreciated

Please understand that my dogs have nothing to do with the situation. The mail slot in my door is ALL the way up the stairs. They arent going to walk 20 stairs when they wont walk 5 stairs.

If I tripped up the stairs to my office at work, I couldnt tell them that I wont walk up the stairs anymore and that they need to move my desk to the bottom of them?

I thought the mailmen had a motto..through snow and rain etc.

NOW THE WONT WALK UP STAIRS??

I live a few blocks from a high school where the kids walk by my house everyday. If I were to move my mailbox it would be a prime target to be harrassed.

Matters like this are always best handled in writing. Send them a letter advising why you believe you should not have to move your mailbox.

Instead of complaining, why not ask where you can locate the box so that the mailman can deliver the mail safely, yet not be disturbed by the local teenagers.
Is it possible that your stairs are a hazard? For example, bad condition, loose boards, items strewn about?
Which is more important, that the mailman be able to deliver the mail safely, or that you have your way?

just stop by any post office and tell them you need to know the rules about putting a mailbox cuz you building a new house or something.

if according to the rules your mailbox is in a wrong place, move it otherwise tell your local post office to stop playing or you'll get a lawyer and you take a lawyer's advice.

You might not have any choice. The Post Office can tell you to put your mailbox in a certain place or we won't deliver your mail.

If you fight it, what will happen is they will come into your neighborhood and put in a "neighborhood unit" that is a block away for you to walk to, instead of in your door.

Stop babying your dogs, and use the one on the side of the house. Train your dogs to deal with it.
