We think our lives are boring in comparison to theirs! The media tell us they live better, look better, do things better, and have more of life's rewards. Thus, we idolize them! We believe we're less worthy. So, we imagine ourselves as being them, and live vicariously through them. In reality, they have their own share of problems [drugs, divorces, suicides, depression] by living in their competitive, cut-throat world. But, the tabloids lead us to believe they have idyllic lives. They become immortals, and we place them on unobtainable pedestals.

Good question. They get into that lifestyle, and then complain about all the attention that is focused upon them. They get paid much more than most of us to be professional entertainers. They should focus on the "professional" part. The majority of these people, you never hear much about, because they do their job, and get back on the bus and focus on their job. Sure, they party, and so does everyone else, but for the most part, they keep control of themselves. The smart ones think of their work as a job, and try to give good performances, and keep their heads. But the ones you keep hearing about, are just junkies, who have no standards. anyone can have a run of bad luck, and get a DUI or something, but most people dont repeat that. Or couldnt afford to. These overpaid media whores, though, just dont care. Until the media turns on them, In fact, the attention from the Media is a big part of the problem. I just dont even watch that stuff.

Some people are drawn to money, power and the access these things give! What I wish we as Americans know is this these people are human beings! They sit on the toilet and sleep and eat just like you do! They shine and sometimes they fall! But we need to respect the fact that we are all human beings and we all make choices! But to answer your Q? America originality from great Britain where there are kings and queens! Celebrities are the America copy!

It's because on television and in movies, the life of a celebrity and living in Hollywood is presented as glamorous. Even more basic than that, sex sells.
If you have a commercial full of slim, beautiful women with skimpy bikinis on, doesn't that keep your attention versus ugly, overweight ones in full body suits?

We're programmed to!!
The publicity machine works hard to get us obsessed with celebrities.
Celebritie$ benefit when we buy their music or clothing lines and watch their music.
Magazine$ benefit by increasing their distribution and charge higher rates for advertising,
And we benefit by having something to obsess and talk about around the watercooler.
By the way, What's paris Hilton upto these days?
