While it is theoretically possible for him to catch or surpass Rickey, I don't believe he will for various reasons:
1) He plays a demanding position that will put a little extra wear and tear on him as the years go on.
2) He hasn't even hit his prime years power wise, which he might fill out a little more, start trying to hit a few more home runs or doubles
3) Baseball today doesn't run as much as they used...while Rickey had three seasons over 100SB's, Jose isn't going to be asked to do that w/ the lineup the Mets are going to provide behind him, 70-90SB's would be a great estimate...but when he is 34 playing shortstop...he won't be putting up #'s like that, no player these days does that at that age.
4) Triples - He loves the triple and is amongst the league leaders the last couple of years, which probably take a few possible SB's away
5) Longevity - This goes back to the wear and tear, the chance of injury during a double play and his own approach as he starts getting developing more gap/hr power.
Like another answer...top 5 is possible, but Rickey's record is probably safe with the way baseball is played today.

As much as I love Jose.. I just don't think he can catch Rickey Henderson. Not only has the game changed.. but bdough15 is right. As shortstop, there is a lot more wear-and-tear on his body and stealing bases contributes to that. Just look at how he's been in a slump the past couple of months..

JOSE JOSE JOSE!!! He is the greatest in the game now....all time??? I really hope so and he has sooo much time to get better.....but if you compare his number to Rickey Henderson's right now he is not even in the same league as Rickey. Rickey had over 100 sb's 3 times in his career. He had 130 one year! He finished with 1406 in his career. He averaged 74 a year. Reyes is averaging 51.4 a year, granted he has only been in the league 4 full years and has been getting better....Rickey was just so much better than everyone else.

I think he has a chance to rank up there with the all time stolen base leaders once he is done and barring injury. At the end of this year, he should have close to 240 career sb's, and he is just 24 years old. I think he can average 50 sb fo the next 10 years, and that would bring him to 740sb at 34 years old, with several years still in him. He can probably wind up in the top 5 all-time.

He could, the only problem is that his position in the field is a little more demanding on the body than an OF position is so his body is more likely to break down. He is putting up great stats for SB so far...leads the league in SB and Caught stealing...not many guys get to do that.

Hamstring injuries take a whilst to heal. that's a threat next season he could desire to be lower back to his old self, yet on the comparable time you are able to seem at Soriano and how he has been when you consider that his leg injuries. i could say there's a 70% threat he returns to his old strategies.

No one will ever catch Ricky Henderson. He had 1406 in his career.
Reyes would need to average 70 steals for the next 17 seasons.
Impossible.
