& 3 of us r PA to 1 manager each. Job was made 6 mths ago & we were offered a set amount of money all receiving the same £. The previous person to do this role looked after all 3 managers herself, when she left it was decided to share each manager between us & split her salary in 3. Not all 3 of us are full time, 2 are, 1 isn't and cos she's p/time (18 hours), she has been allocated the manager who requires the least amount of work. The 2 of us who've more demanding roles r doing twice the work & cover her when she's not here plus she's always passing her work to our manager. We think it's really unfair that she's receiving the same amount. She even said herself she expected it to be done pro rata. HR reply is this role is a 12 hour allocation per wk, we do this but the other person can't possibly dedicate 12 hours to her manager & her manager doesn't require 12 hours a wk & she can't complete tasks. HR said it's a third of our job role which is fair to us but not realistic for her....

sorry question is, is this fair and what can we do about it? We are doing twice the work for the same pay as someone part time how can it be fair?

There are two separate issues here: firstly, the fact that you're all on the same salary. You don't give enough detail, but there are some circumstances in which it could be fair. For example, with admin jobs, it's quite possible that you could have someone with, say, two years experience doing the same job as someone with ten years experience, and in that case, you wouldn't expect the two of them to earn the same amount. Could this apply in your case? That is, is the person who is only working part-time have sufficient experience that she could command a far higher wage than what you can? However, you're right, it's probably not fair. But you can't do anything at all about it. If you're really that upset about it, then leave.

The second issue is that you've said you're spending a lot of time covering for her when you should be doing your own job. I'm in a similar situation at the moment - the receptionist at my workplace keeps "delegating" her work to me - she has no right to do this; I'm not even admin staff! I like to try to be helpful but it's now getting to the point where I don't have time to do my own work and this is jeopardising my chance to earn my bonus. I'm going to speak to her manager about this, and how he deals with this is his concern. But note that this is a separate issue than worrying about what anyone gets paid.

I'm guessing your question is, "Is it fair that she's getting the same pay as we are?"

The answer is simple: your job is to assist your manager and cover for the PA who is part time. That's your job, plain and simple. You are compensated for doing your job. If you think you deserve a raise, ask for one. However, worrying about what others in the office are paid and how it compares to your salary detracts from your performance and is disruptive to the office. And, frankly, what others make is really none of your affair.
