The Greeks aren't our only intellectual ancestors, but they are high on the list. Philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle asked many eternal questions to which men are still trying to find the answer. They developed democracy, and added to the legacy of literature, drama, and poetry. They made huge advancements in physics, mathmatics archetecture and even athletics.

Other than that, they just sat around eating feta and drinking ouzo.

The Greeks Approached things through a perspective of logic and reason. Believe it or not, this is not something every culture does. Many cultures are even the direct opposite of this.

The Romans got some of this from the Greeks, and Europe revived these Roman Ideas during the renaissance. Western Civilization now has grown out from that base.
