If it's a gasolene powered boat, then it's exactly the same as a car's ignition system. If it's a diesel powered boat ( and most sailboats and large vessels are),, then there is no ignition system. A diesel ignites its fuel/air mixture by compressing it until it reaches ignition temperature... there are no spark plugs, coils or ignition system.

Gasoline: Same as automobile but it uses sealed components to eliminate sparks to avoid igniting fuel-air gasses in the engine compartment.

Diesel: Same as diesel truck or car with the same provisions lised above.

Sail: Bend the sails.

Above are good. On my brother's boat, it have twin Diesels. He makes me go down in the engine room and I turn a switch on each engine and push a button and it start. To turn off someone has to go down and turn them off. On some boats they start just like a car, with 1-2 keys at the Helm (Steering Wheel) depending on the number of engines.

some have remote start/stop and some don't. a person is stationed in or near the engine room to monitor the generators, pumps, and main engines. the remote start can be electric direct, electric over air, or electric over hydraulic. if any have a key switch, i've missed something somewhere.
