I turned on the computer and it messed up after i installed it. its ddr2 dimm. i installed it just fine, but when it went to the windows screen with the light bar at the bottom it would freeze up and then the screen would mess up. Can I use the 4200u with the 5300u or can it only be the 5300u ram? i took the new ones out and it started just fine. thanks

You cannot use mismatched ram in a PC, if the PC uses 5300u then buy MORE 5300u or throw it all away and use all 4200u for a slightly slower PC.

DO NOT mix memory speeds, it crashes, but then you noticed that

Buy 5300 ram.Puter should have booted up even with the slower ram. Make sure your rig can take sticks as big as you bought. Go here and click on "scan my system" with your 5300 in and see what your upgrade options are. Maybe crashed because you tried putting 1GB sticks in when your machine will only support 512 sticks.

Shouldn't you be using the same specifications for your rams?

.....

I don't really know about there compatibility, but past experiences tell me that, RAMS should be the same!

WEll, that's what I know... I don't know if they changed it so that you can now use different RAMS... try to get it to a repair shop if no one answers your question with more suitable answers... :)

first guy got it right, also note that your mother board will clock down to whatever speed it can handle so its better to buy a little bit more than your speed than to buy a little less, buying slower ram has no point but its still easiest to get the one your computer is specifying

You should always try to match the memory. Also many motherboards still do not support 4GB ram.

when adding ram it must match to work together,go see if you can swap it to match the original.
