Your navel is essentially just a scar. It serves no specific biological purpose, and you would not suffer in any particular way if you had it removed, had extra skin stitched over it, and so on... no more than you would suffer if any other scar was removed.

Of course, some people attach PSYCHOLOGICAL significance to a navel, and I'm sure some people would feel odd at the beach if they didn't have one. But that is all in your head.

When a fetus is inside the uterus, the fetus is fed through the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord is attached from the fetus's belly to the placenta, which provides nutrients to the fetus. After the baby is born, the umbilical cord is no longer needed, as the baby will be fed either breast milk or formula, so the umbilical cord falls off. The belly button is what is left over after the umbilical cord falls off and it serves no purpose.

The belly button, or navel, is a scar which forms due to the removal of the umbilical cord, it is purely cosmetic. If you were to lose your belly button then you would most likely be able to get a plastic surgeon to create one for you, although it would depend on what injuries you sustained in losing the original.
