I agree with whoever that politician was about re-instating the draft. And this is coming from a 17 year old and it will certainly effect me and my friends.
It is so easy for congress and Bush to send more troops to Iraq when it's not effecting them peronally. Rich wealthy kids for the most part don't join the army. They go to college and continue there eduacation.
The poor kids, who can't afford school, or weren't given a good enough education to get in, join the army. They are the ones fighting for our freedom. A draft would allow the war in Iraq to hit home. How could anyone disagree with this.

If you believe in a draft then enlist. if you think the anti war protests now are bad you haven't seen anything compared to the explosion of protest you would have if a draft were instituted.
It would cause the Vietnam era protests to pale in comparision.

The draft would not change the wealth imbalance. Attending a full time school has always been an acceptable deferment for the draft.

Additionally, there is currently no one in Iraq that did not volunteer. When joining the military you are aware of the risk you take, the military may be called to action at any time. I knew this when I joined.

By reinstating the draft, you will add more poor people in to the mix, now you are just sending unwilling people. If you look at wars fought by a mostly volunteer force (like Iraq I & II) and compare them to wars fought by a drafted force (like Vietnam) you will see that adding draftees in to the mix will not make things better.

You're hearts in the right place--but you need to learn a bit more about the issue. Here's two points to think about:

>first--there are always ways for people with money to keep their kds out of combat. ALWAYS. So a draft won't affect the rich and powerful at all--except that they'll have to take the trouble to work the system a bit, instead of just not joining the military.
>IF you have a draft, you give the government the power to force citizens to fight in a war they disagree with. Take a good look at Iraq, right now. There are 160,000 American troops there getting shot at for nothing. How many do you think Bush would have there if he could force people to go fight his war?

There are a lot of good books out there about the Vietnam war, focusing onthe draft, anti-war movement, and related issues--wdritten from botth conservative as well as liberal viewpoints. Read up on it--find out how a draft actually functions in our modern society before you decide you want to support it.

America is a "free" nation. We do not "daft" Americans unless there is a live or die situation. So far that does not exist. The reason "some" politician is trying to push this idea, is for votes. People "hate" those wealthier then themselves and want to force those "evil nasty rich people" to send their kids to war. There are actually a good amount of "rich" kids who sign up but the % is small since the "rich" are a small portion of America. This is what the political elite do to con a vote out of the ignorant.
So the answer is No, unless in a time of all out survival. We have great technology and don’t need the same kind of “manpower” that was needed in WW I and WW II

silly girl, even if the draft gets re-instated the rich and powerful never get sent to war. The either stay in college longer or get cushy assignments working in the states. Look at Georgie Bush's military record.

It has always been the poor that has served and a draft won't matter, it will only force people that don't want to go to be drafted.

truthfully not! we've a expert military, made up entirely of volunteers. they're pretty introduced directly to do the activity. Why might we could replace that? A draft might usher in people who have no desire to be there, or accomplish the challenge. whilst a draft exists, disciplinary issues flow for the duration of the roof. AWOL and desertion expenses boost. "friendly" fireplace incidents additionally upward thrust. No, enable's leave it by myself. issues are large the way they're.

They shouldn't reinstate the draft, theres a lot of reserve troops that they can send there already with extensive training already, they should only reinstate the draft if people are dying in record numbers in Iraq, which they're not, and if they do reinstate it then a lot of kids with very little military training are going to go over there and get killed easily, so I think it would be disastrous and wouldn't solve anything, it should be our last resort.

No. The draft should not be reinstituted.
I've said before and I say again, war is an old man's game.

There are many of us who already have military experience and who would be willing to return IF ONLY THEY WOULD TAKE US.

I say again, older veterans are still able to do many of the combat jobs that the young soldiers now do.
I say again, if the older men were allowed to serve, we would not see so much combat.
I say again, if the 'legislators' were required to be in the military as a function of their office, we would see an end to war.

No one hates war as much as a warrior.

Don't fool yourself into thinking the draft affects everyone equally.

When there was a draft "daddy & mommy's" money and connection still kept the rich kids out of the war.

So you would gladly give up the right to decide your future for yourself. You would gladly be forced into war even if you don't agree with it.

Do you honestly think that politicians would allow their children to be caught up in the draft? Do you believe that people woudln't run just as they did in teh 60's?

The war in Iraq hits home every day. We lose soldiers. I never agreed that we should go to war. I have been actively involved in protesting the war. I do support our troups. I do not support our leadership who sent them there.
