Actually, one of the less spoken about frictions leading up to the American revolution was the colonies wanting to expand westward, while Great Britain did not want to rush into westward expansion. George Washington, as a lieutenant (or maybe Colonel) in the Virginia Militia, was sent into the Ohio valley because of reports of French expansion in the area. Washington and many Virginia landowners were quite excited about the idea of buying up lands in the Ohio valley.His biggest obstacle with trying to expand beyond the Mississippi is that those lands were controlled by France, which was our greatest ally during the revolution. It would have been beyond imagination for a young weak country like the U.S. to have turned on the country that was so important in helping America win the war.
