I love Gothic horror and think it's an underrepresented genre, though the most popular horror these days tends to be more over the top gore and weirdness. Things I appreciate in horror include suspense, unsettling atmosphere, and unreliable narrators. There's nothing wrong with gross details, but I think they're more effective in moderation or in combination with psychological horror. Insanity is always good. Ghosts too. Vampires can be, but they're a little overdone.

Write about somebody doing their thesis for their doctorate on some sort of oddity and ends up going mad due to their research.

I think the scariest things are the things that could really happen.

I would have to ask you if you have ever read any horror books or stories? Try that first and then ask questions.
Alfred Hitchcock said,"Suspense is not the sound of a bang." That is only a hint.

u have to write whatever story is in ur head. something will come to mind. the only story worth writing is the one u want to tell people. someone will read it if it is written well.

If you have no idea on what to write about, then dont.
Asking others for ideas is ridiculous. A writer has to have an imagination of his own. Its not about what others like, its about what you like.
